What if I told you… that dark hair is not my natural hair colour.
It isn’t. My natural hair colour is like a dirty strawberry blonde. I’ve been dying my hair dark since I was 19 – so it’s all most people have ever known. Besides playing with colourful cosplay wigs every now and then, my loyalty has and always will be to the dark side.
From teenage DIY home colour kits, letting hairdresser friends’ experiment on my hair, to inconsistent hair salon trips with someone new each time – I’m actually surprised my hair has survived and is still thick as ever. Though, when it comes to colour vitality, a decade of colouring left my hair feeling seriously weighed down and dull.
What I needed was a colour revitalization, and someone to remove all the bad hair sins of my past, transforming my dull, weather-beaten lifeless off-black hair into a colour more rich, soothing and warm. Like a chocolate brunette, full of vibrant buoyancy. Mmm, chocolate.
Being the internet detective I am, I researched award-winning salons in Perth that specialise in style and colour. Yes, anybody could do colour – but I wanted a salon that is passionate about colour. Because when it comes to enormous amount of colour build up removal needed, you really shouldn’t skip on quality, nor should you have to dunk your head in a basin of bleach either. There must be more sustainable, gentler ways for colour transformation…. and thankfully in Perth, there is one leading salon that truly excels in this field. Read on.

?? Why Fatty Arbuckles is Kind of a Big Deal ✂️?
Fatty Arbuckles is a hair salon oasis located in the riverside precinct of East Perth, right near the beautiful Victoria Gardens Park. The name comes from Roscoe Conkling “Fatty” Arbuckle, a famous but controversial American silent film actor, comedian, director, and screenwriter; one of the most popular silent stars of the 1910’s, and one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood at the time. He mentored Charlie Chaplin and discovered Buster Keaton and Bob Hope.
Back to the hair salon now, which with its chic opulence, feels more like a retreat than your usual Perth hairdresser.
Their award winning creative team, led by Annette Scaffidi, (whom has 24+ years experience in salons here and in London under her belt) specialises in cutting edge colour and cutting techniques. I also heard great things about their head colourist, Justin, who is a Master Colour Designer and Colour Correction Specialist. I didn’t want just anybody redoing my hair colour – it needed to be man like Justin for the job.
I first found out about Fatty Arbuckles on The Urban List’s Readers Choice: Perth’s Best Hairdressers article. I was searching online for experienced hairdressers that could transform my friends’ and I hair into wavy 1920’s styles for a Gatsby themed ball we were both attending. What swayed us to go with Fatty was the fact they had a Make up Artist & Beauty Expert on their creative team too (the lovely Lindsey) which was just super convenient. We could drink red wine while getting hair and makeup done in one go! Boom!
Check out pics from our Gatsby Ball below:

Justin, the Master Colour Designer at Fatty Arbuckles styled my friend’s hair for the Gatsby themed ball. She was thrilled with the results.
Another thing I liked about Fatty Arbuckles that sets them a part from other salons is their sustainability mission. They make a conscious effort to reduce, reuse and recycle – embracing a Green philosophy while trying to run a more sustainable salon. They do:
- Ammonia free colouring options.
- They carry the organic, paraben and sulphate free styling range, Qaba.
- They use foil made from recycled Aluminium which is then recycled after use to be processed and reused.
- They use Eco Head on their basin taps which filter out any pollutants and reduces 40% of water usage.
- They only use recycled paper, which includes their mailing envelopes printing paper, letterheads and client questionnaires. All scrap paper is reused or recycled.
- Excess colouring products are not washed down the drain into the water supply but instead disposed of safely. It is all weighed and recorded to minimise future wastage.
What followed was a fun afternoon getting to know the team, and we all got on really well! The salon has a ‘give back’ philosophy which comes with no bullshit, no marketing fluff or fear mongering spiels. They exceed expectations and are completely transparent and open with what they are doing with your hair, approaching everything with patience and a sense of humour, which shows they put their clients first.
Oh and one more great thing – they hold regular make up and hair seminars and workshops, so anyone (not just industry professionals) can pick up tricks of their trade!

?? My Hair Colour Transformation ✂️?

Before getting stuck into it – I went next door to Kinky Lizard Espresso Bar to order a Salad & Coffee! They ended up delivering it to me at Fatty Arbuckles. Super convenient and chilled vibes, 5 star kind of service haha.

BEFORE: Funny how in certain lighting my hair appeared lighter – but this is the true off-blackish colour of my hair, with some patches of dark brown in it. Time for an even-all over chocolate makeover!

Colour Removal Phase 1: The first product used on my hair was Shine Light to remove colour build up. My hair was glad wrapped up and put under heat for a bit to let it lift 3 shades lighter.

Colour Removal Phase 1 Results: Shine Light removed major colour build up to show any areas of concern. Justin noticed a darker band on my upper mid section that needed more attention.

Colour Removal Phase 2 Results: After Justin put a gentle lightening mix on the dark band through the mid section of my hair, my hair came out looking a lot more even all over and lighter.

Phase 3: Target Shade & Foils Begin! Once we had an even colour, Justin went in with my target shade with Olaplex. (Olaplex is a bond multiplier that is an additive to colour and lightener, building bonds for stronger hair while helping colour last longer).

At the basin, Justin followed it up with an Olaplex treatment – which helps to reconnect broken disulfide sulfur bonds in the hair (limiting damage to hair during or after colouring). This stuff was going to give me amazing results!!! 😛

Yaassss!!! Basin selfieeeee while waiting for the goodness to absorb into my hair! I look like a sweet Amish girl here.

RESULTS! Taken on an iPhone at about 5:45pm. Colour is a chocolate brown with some deep red undertones to it!

RESULTS! Taken on a Samsung Galaxy S6 at 5:45pm – Colour shows as a chocolate brown but with slightly more red undertones shining through.

Selfie of new hair colour – it almost matches my eyes! Thanks Justin 🙂 I love it.

I also like that my new hair colour is still dark, but with more warmth to it. Perfect for spring and summer.
Post-Hair Celebration at Victoria Gardens Park & Super Moon

Make sure to unwind at Victoria Gardens Park, which is a super short walk from Fatty Arbuckles.

Oh and there’s a random lifesized fiber glass pink cow at the park. I think City of Perth is doing some sort of community art event by displaying cows at public spaces around Perth.

If you’re looking for somewhere to eat for dinner – try Royal on the Waterfront which again is a very short walk from Fatty Arbuckles They are a decent restaurant & pub with great views of the water.

Spotted this dog with a bow. Looking fresh AF.

Then later that night, I watched the Super Moon – here’s my aweful photo of it. Taken on a Samsung Galaxy S6 on ‘Pro Focus’ – not as ‘pro’ as I was hoping. 😛

Thanks for my colour transformation, Justin! They blend in with my new hair extensions perfectly 🙂
