WHAT IS POLE DANCING?
Pole dance is a form of performance art, traditionally associated with strip clubs, combining dance and acrobatics centered on a vertical pole.
Despite its risqué origins, public perception of pole dancing has changed dramatically, especially in the last decade. It’s shaken off its old, negative stigma (that was once seen as a realm only for strippers and exotic dancers) and instead blossomed into a well-respected industry that’s gone mainstream, admired for the skill involved and recognized for being an effective, proven, fitness alternative that gets you results.
It is practiced by fitness enthusiasts in gyms and dance studios, with a wide range of amateur and professional competitions held around the world. In fact, there is now serious debate on whether pole dancing should be accepted as an Olympic sport. Just check out the video below to understand why.
HOW DID THE PERCEPTION OF POLE DANCING CHANGE?
Well in summary, during the mid 2000’s, promoters of pole dance fitness competitions were actively trying to change the public’s perception of pole dance, promoting it rather as a non-sexual form of dance and acrobatics that should be recognised for the skill involved. Fast forward to 2015, and ladies (and gents) of all fitness levels, shapes, sizes and ages are attending pole dancing classes near their suburb to challenge their fitness levels, try something new or perhaps they are just curious.

No, it is not expected of you to pole dance in your most erotic lingerie. Simple gym gear will do. Just don’t wear leggings or pants, as you need your legs to grip onto the pole.
WHAT’S POLE DANCING EXERCISE LIKE?
Pole dancing is essentially resistance training – as you are carrying your body weight on your arms and legs while you lift or spin around the pole. It’s also an upper body workout, requiring you to develop core muscles so you’ll progress to do more, advanced moves. Core strength is vital in order to attain proficiently, and like with any athletic sport, rigorous training and practice is necessary. So if you want rock solid abs, then this may be for you.
It’s also a great cardiovascular workout, and you will get the opportunity to work on and improve your flexibility over time.

Shemoves uses pole dance, sensual and exotic dance to stretch, strengthen, trim, tone and burn fat, exclaiming that “every Shemoves studio is a beautiful, safe, ladies-only environment, where women from all sortsof backgrounds (and all ages and sizes, too) come to get strong and fit”
Shemoves is located in three locations, Perth, Joondalup (north of the river) and Canningvale (south of the river). They offer all the general pole dancing courses you would expect, from Polemoves for beginners right through to advanced, flex appeal and lap moves – but they also offer other unique classes for those who wish to try something completely new.
Aerial classes in Aerial Hoop (lyra) and Aerial Silks (silkmoves), ‘polesque’ (which combines burlesque with pole dance spins) are popular here, as well as the ‘Smoulder & Burn/Spin’ class.
They also have dance classes like ‘LaViva’ (which is a cardio dance fitness class that is inspired by Latin, Middle Eastern, South American and Indian dance styles combined) and ‘Clubmoves’ which shows you step by step some of the sexiest new dance moves direct from New York club scene.
I did a Shemoves beginners course, as well as a large number of smoulder & burn casual classes a few years back at the Joondalup location and had a positive experience there. I made new friends and the teachers were fun-loving and friendly. I recommend Shemoves Joondalup studio too, for those who live far north.
