Throwing of the Grape is Western Australia’s answer to the La Tomatina Tomato Festival in Spain. Held in Swan Valley, it was a ‘grape’ day out with friends.
The fifth annual ‘Throwing of The Grape’ harvest festival has returned again to Swan Valley for more boutique food, wine, music and messy grape throwing and squashing action at Oakover Winery. It’s all in the spirit of celebrating the first wine harvest at Oakover Winery for 2015!
Reminiscent of ‘La Tomatina’ in Spain where streets are filled with people throwing tomatoes at each other, the Throwing of the Grape is all about stomping on grapes and throwing them at everyone. I went with a group of mates for the first time this year and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! The grape throwing is just one part of a big day. There are also plenty of other activities on offer, including mechanical bull riding (which I attempted a go at, see below for my eye-brow raising video), inflatable gladiator jousting, face painting, zorb balls, red bull silent disco, water dunking tanks, a sangria tent and wine tasting with the Oakover Winemaker.
So if you’re not keen to grape throw, or get ‘graped’ (which is not compulsory by the way to do so) then there is still so much more to entertain you throughout the day. My friend and I were trying to organise our group to be in an Ancient Roman kind of theme, with white sheets and Caesar style outfits, but only two of us actually went through with it.
Check out some of my personal pictures below on how the Throwing of the Grape day went for my friends and I:
The silent disco was awesome fun!
Lunch is included in the ticket price where guests can help themselves to the ‘food huts’ located around the Oakover Lawns. Drinks are available from the cash bar where cash out facilities are available. Options below:

There are two ticket options, you get a choice of Ticket Only ($80 where guests need to organize their own transport to and from Oakover Winery) or Transport & Ticket ($90 – where a bus transports you to and from Swan Valley from the South Perth foreshore or Stirling Train Station). We chose Ticket Only. Private buses and group discount (for 40 to 80 people) is also available.
IN SUMMARY MY THOUGHTS: Awesome day out with friends, memorable and wel
