It’s not just Margaret River that produces quality wine. Expand your tastebuds & explore new parts of WA: discover the best wineries in Western Australia.
Western Australia is no ordinary dry, boring outback desert – it boasts one of the longest and scenic coastlines in the world, with gorgeous lush forests and rivers, mountainous ranges and along with it, just the right climate and rich soil for making beautifully diverse West Australian wine.
The most iconic wine region goes to Margaret River; a pristine isolation where ancient lands and twin oceans meet to make the region a lush paradise, and one of the world’s greatest environments to grow ultra-premium varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. It is very popular with locals and tourists alike, having won countless awards for tourism and wine making.
But what if I told you that there is far more to West Australian produced wine beyond the popularity of Margaret River?
There are nine wine regions in Western Australia to sample wine, with six of the nine being found in Australia’s South West.

Getting up and close with West Australian grapes, but not too close – don’t want any bugs up my nose!
? The Three Major Wine Regions in WA ?
There are wineries across Western Australia in the Perth Hills, the Darling Range, Pemberton, Manjimup, Geographe, Blackwood Valley, The Great Southern, Swan Valley and yes, the fan favourite Margaret River. You can get more detailed information from the Wines of Western Australia website.
Let’s focus on the three major wine regions in WA which together, have over 150 wineries, each showcasing their own very distinctive notes and signatures. When travelling to these regions, consider making the detour into their surrounding sub-regions for hidden wineries that are off the beaten track.
The Great Southern wine region is Australia’s largest wine region wit a rectangle of 200 km from east to west and 100 km from north to south. It has five sub-regions for wine there, namely the Porongurups, Mount Barker, Albany, Denmark, and Frankland River. The region is known best for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot noir, Shiraz, and Malbec.
The Swan Valley wine region is considered the hottest wine region in all of Australia, with grape harvest usually beginning in January. The Swan Valley is located an easy 45 minute drive north of Perth, and is among the largest sources of WA’s wine, with grape varieties such as Verdelho, Chenin blanc, and Chardonnay. They also have great coffee in the Swan Valley region too and is a popular choice for those who don’t want to drive too far from the city.
The Margaret River wine region is to the south of Western Australia, and has a temperate climate from the cooling influence of the Indian Ocean. Predominant grape varieties cultivated here include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sémillion, Sauvignon blanc, Chenin blanc, and Chardonnay. Here the climate is a warm Mediterranean temperature which give rich fertile soils help create the perfect environment for grape vines. Out of the three above, Margaret River is the most iconic, while also having the most prize winning wineries.

? Wine Touring Western Australia ?

Recently I went on a wine tour ‘down south‘ to Margaret River with friends, and not long after that to Albany & Denmark on a short road trip. Both experiences got me thinking that I should write a decent article that lists all the highly rated wineries in our magnificent state – and not just ones in Margaret River, but everywhere! We’re talking about the best of the best wineries – highly rated, awarded winning wines!
When in Margaret River, my friends and I went on the Bushtucker River & Wine Tours and it was so much fun! Our tour guide (who looked alot like John Jarrett from Wolf Creek, haha) took us to a variety of iconic breweries, wineries and more in Margaret River where we sampled wines, beers, ciders and nibbled on gourmet food. The bushtucker lunch was excellent, featuring crocodile and an array of fair dinkum Aussie bush-inspired delights.
See some pics below:

Here I am enjoying liqueur tasting with friends on tour at The Grove Experience Distillery in Wilyabrup, Margaret River.

No, that’s not John Jarratt from Australian Horror Film Wolf Creek (lol). That’s our wonderful tour guide/driver from Bushtucker River & Winery Brewery Tours!

You’ll find lots of quirky signage while wine touring around Western Australia, that’s for sure! Here’s one warning us of crocodiles at The Grove Experience Distillery – the staff there have a great sense of humour!

Another warning sign seen outside The Grove Experience in Margaret River – this time warning us about blood thirsty Drop Bears. Those pesty Koala’s!!!!

When we went on a Margaret River wine tour, we made sure to book in advance some in-town accommodation – this gorgeous chalet townhouse. Smell the serenity!

Inside Castle Rock Winery Estate (near Albany & Denmark) sampling their wine.

When in Albany, we stayed at this stunning homestead cottage which which was a 4 minute drive from town.

As you can see, the views from our rented house were amazing – with lots of cows and a friendly emu! I’ll write a separate article about my experience of Albany soon with more pics!
When road tripping to Albany & Denmark, we were short on time but I still made us do a pitstop at Castle Rock Estate Winery in Porongorup on the way back to Perth. I couldn’t leave the Great Southern region without tasting some of their award winning Riesling!
So if you feel like a change of geographic scenery, may I personally suggest heading to the Great Southern Wine Region. I blown away by the stunning landscape, the ocean, the history, architecture and of course – their vineyards! If you do plan on heading to Albany & Denmark, try to get a homestead-style accommodation for yourself and the family – it’s a unique and wonderful way to immerse yourself into the delightful surroundings.

ALKOOMI WINES, Great Southern Region

Alkoomi is situated in the most isolated wine-growing region in Western Australia – Frankland River. Alkoomi Facebook Page
Alkoomi Wines is situated in the most isolated wine-growing region in Western Australia – 330km south of Perth and 80km inland from the far south coast, just outside the tiny town of Frankland River. They are the original Frankland River Winemakers, and are rated 5 Red Stars by renowned wine expert James Halliday.
The ethos of Alkoomi’s vineyard management has always been to favour quality over quantity, and to manage the property in an environmentally sustainable manner. ASHBROOK ESTATE, Margaret River Region

Follow up this red dirt track to get to Ashbrook Estate’s rustic tasting rooms. TripAdvisor User’s Photo
While many of the wineries in Margaret River are huge and elegant, Ashbrook Estate is the antidote to this. Established in the mid 1970s, the estate is now a third generation winery, having a relaxed and modest approach to winemaking despite long standing famed reputation. The place is earthy, rustic and warm, a very ‘Aussie-looking’ estate to visit, while the wine itself is famed for its quality of young Riesling wines which have great structure and balance.
James Halliday awarded Ashbrook with a five star rating, describing it as “one of the quietest and highest achievers in Australia, maintaining excellent viticulture and fastidious winemaking.”

CASTLE ROCK ESTATE VINES, Great Southern Region

My Picture: The view of the Porongurups while walking into Castle Rock Estate.

Up close views of the Ranges from Castle Rock.

Wine tasting at Castle Rock.
Castle Rock Estate is one of the more renowned wineries in the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia, having won many awards for their Riesling, and being a favourite of prominent Australian wine writer James Halliday. In his book, “James Halliday’s Wine Atlas of Australia“, he wrote that it is an exceptionally beautifully sited and immaculately maintained vineyard, winery and cellar door sales area with sweeping vistas from the Porongurups.
Castle Rock is located on the northeast face of the Porongurup mountain range 40km north east of Albany and 30km southeast of Mt. Barker. The estate enjoys a clear view of the Stirling Ranges across the vineyard from the cellar.
I recently visited Albany and Denmark, and with the short amount of time we had, I chose Castle Rock Estate to drop into on the way home mostly for their vantage viewpoint of the landscape and because of their range of Rieslings. The lady there was very informative and helpful, talking us through the history of Castle Rock and the hard work that goes into winemaking. I ended up buying a bottle of the Turret Riesling 2016 (a semi sweet) and a Muscat.

DEEP WOODS ESTATE WINERY, Margaret River Region

One of the most scenic wineries in Margaret River, Deep Woods is a real gem with its gorgeous scenery. The Wine Gallery
Deep Woods is a smaller winery located in Margaret River that is truly a hidden gem, but perhaps for not much longer, since they picked up the most coveted Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for best young dry red (one or two years old) at the Melbourne Wine show in late 2016. This is a prestigious prize (if you’re not familiar with award labels) and for it go to a winery in Margaret River wine region really reinforces the high quality of wine produced from there.
Considered one of the more scenic wineries in Margs River, it offers natural bushland, sea views and a large spring-fed dam. Their range covers all the Margaret River classic varities along with two dry Roses – a style which the winery has won multiple awards for.

DUKE’S VINEYARD, Great Southern Region

Duke’s Vineyard planted 25 acres of vines on their 160+ acre farm and are running a Suffolk sheep stud on the remaining acreage. Mount Barker Tourism WA
Duke’s Vineyard is the “perfect retirement” property for Duke and Hilde Ranson, with the first vine planted on Duke’s 60th birthday, on the 5th August, 1999. They have planted 25 acres of vines on their 160+ acre farm with a Suffolk sheep stud on the remaining acreage.
Duke’s first vintage in 2001 resulted in a gold medal and since 2013 they have been in Hallidays top 100 winemakers in Australia. In addition, Hilde is a successful artist who designed the tasting area (curved mountain blue cladding) which shows off spectacular views of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges while also being a landmark on the Porongorup tourist route. SI VINTNERS, Margaret River Region

Make sure to call ahead so they know you’re coming, as they off the beaten tourist path. Whitney A
If you are looking for a winery that is “off the beaten tourist track” where you probably have the place to yourself, then give Si Vintners a visit. Inspired by their travels around Europe, the owners make a lovely Australian Cabernet Sauvignon in their simple but high quality winery.
Another attraction here is their mature vines and focus on ‘natural farming’. Their aim is to truly express the land upon which their vines grow, with minimal intervention in both the vineyard and winery.

TYLER’S VINEYARD, Swan Valley Region

The quintessential image of the Swan Valley is found right here in the family-run business of Tyler’s Vineyard. Tylers Vineyard Facebook
Tyler’s Vineyard is a unique family-run business that is different and quirky from other wineries around. They allow you to celebrate your own individuality by letting you create your own label for Tyler’s palatable wine. You can take or bring a photo, design your label, print it out instantly and adorn your bottle at no extra cost. Pretty cool, right? This idea makes for a nice customised birthday or wedding gift too.
Scenic wise, it’s awesome too. They have century old grapevines that align a rustic barnyard and there’s a great ambiance and unpretentious vibe there that you will really enjoy.

Looking for a wine tour to join in Margaret River? I personally recommend Bushtucker Tours – I really enjoyed my experience with them. Our tour guide had amazing energy, very fun while still being professional at the same time, plus they are highly rated on TripAdvisor. I think what I liked the most was our tour guides flexibility – he listened to what the majority of people wanted on the day and catered to us, very easy going (I like it when tour groups aren’t strict). Also the bushtucker lunch is DELICIOUS!

Here I am with a selection of West Australian wine 🙂
