Oz Comic-Con is the ultimate pop culture experience held around Australia for pop culture & cosplay fans. I went to Perth’s Oz Comic-Con to suss it all out.
Enjoy dressing up? A gamer? Anime-obsessed? Love comic books? Do you say Live Long and Prosper way too much? If you haven’t already started going to events like Oz Comic Con… you’re seriously missing out on heaps of fun, because this event would be for you!
Oz Comic-Con brings you up close to the biggest names in comics, anime, manga, sci-fi, fantasy, TV, movies and animation! The event takes place around Australia, bringing enthusiastic cosplayers and pop culture fans together under one roof, with celebrity meet and greet opportunities, comic book stalls, fake weaponry and costumes to buy, as well as plenty of photo opportunities to grab with each other! In Perth, the event is held at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.
My Very First Oz Comic-Con Perth Experience!
Last Saturday, 2nd April, I went to Oz Comic-Con event for the first time! It was a fun experience that’s left me with an even more serious love for cosplay – now I really want to get better at it! There were so many well thought out costumes there and it was so sweet to see even the kids involved. I also liked how organisers set up a cosplay photoshoot section with backdrops – made for nice looking photos.
Every other year I’ve always managed to miss Oz Comic-Con, because you know how it is – Facebook Events stack up and before you know it, you’ve clicked you’re “interested” to every single event happening in your city, when really you’re always just a “maybe” and then you forget about it. But this year I HAD to go! Because XENA was going to be there!
That’s right, Lucy Lawless (aka my childhood warrior princess hero) was the main celebrity guest headlining Oz Comic Con Perth 2016. Despite only finding out about this a day prior (and with little costume preparation time) I had to meet her.
In my mind, Lucy and I would have a photo together, have a laugh, she would compliment my outfit, and then invite me with her for a drink and maybe keep me in mind for her next TV project. Unfortunately none of this happened, because when I arrived at Oz Comic-Con in the early afternoon I found out celebrity guests had set photography/autograph times, and so I missed her photography session! Fortunately I didn’t get time to be disappointed, because I was too distracted with bright shiny costumes around me and people coming up to ME asking for a photo! Ha!
Because of limited time to spare and the fact I couldn’t find my fringe hair extension (gasp, can’t be Xena without the forehead fringe!), I just re-wore my ‘Babarianna’/Viking outfit from a recent Kung Fury-Inspired Photoshoot I did with DarkSpiritPhotography. You can check out how that photoshoot went here: “A Viking Woman in Perth: My Kung Fury Inspired Photoshoot”.

Here’s a cool Oz Comic Con Perth Music Video by FilmCraft, a film and photography business from Western Australia. I thought they did a really nice job, very slick and well put together. Check it out below and feel those cool, cosplay vibes:
Don’t worry that you’ve missed out on Comic Con… Supernova is coming up in June!
That’s right! Don’t feel disappointed you missed out on Oz Comic-Con that’s just passed, because there is another very similar event coming up in June called Supernova. I’m planning to go with a group of friends and have yet decided who I’m going to dress up as.
Visit Supernova’s website on: http://www.supanova.com.au/show-information/perth/ for all the details.
I certainly won’t be a viking/barbarian again! I feel I’ve really now exhausted that costume – I still love Babarianna from KungFury though, she’ll always be my doppelganger homegirl!
Overall, would definitely go again – and next time will be bringing more friends. It’s even more fun if you get a group together. I’m looking forward to Supernova!
