Chess enthusiasts rejoice – there’s an outdoor giant chess board in Fremantle, WA, located in Kings Square (right outside Fremantle’s Town Hall) for the public to play with; as well as two ping pong tables.
If you don’t mind a bit of a breeze, some mild heavy lifting and exercise during a game of strategic chess, then give this a try next time you pass through the centre of Fremantle.
The game is available from Monday through to Sunday, 9am to 4pm. Head to the Fremantle Visitor Centre (also located in Kings Square) to obtain the giant (half a metre high) chess pieces to start playing.
The outdoor giant chess board is a great novelty that no doubt attracts young men eager to stragetize against each other with oversized pawns in a display of physical and mental strength. I sat down to watch two guys play and I don’t think they minded the attention. It’s awesome to see the different kind of crowds of people this giant chess game draws.
Other great amenities in Kings Square is free wifi and outdoor powerboards to plug your laptop/phone charger into. There is also a library nearby and more perks. Just ask when you visit The Information Centre. If you’re wanting to explore more of central Fremantle, there are free CAT buses, where one goes around the town centre and to the arts centre while the other one goes to South Beach (the main beach).
