Sasha Grey stopped by Villa Nightclub in Perth to show off her DJ skills as part of her Australian tour and I got to meet her!
I got my very own ‘girlfriend experience‘ meeting Sasha Grey last weekend at Villa Nightclub in Perth (hosted by Boomtick events).
You may or may not be familiar with Sasha Grey’s past body of work. She’s a former adult film star that got serious attention and I suppose you could say, stood out from the rest.
Starting her career in the infamous industry in her late teens, she went on to star in 300 or so adult films, soon finding great success outside the industry thanks to the surge of her Hollywood profile.
From appearing as an interviewee guest on the Tyra Banks Show to talk about the infamous industry; making a cameo in Entourage as Vincent Chase’s girlfriend; to starring in Steven Soderberg’s acclaimed 2009 film “The Girlfriend Experience”; she’s made an even bigger name for herself. Add to all this that she’s a model and author and you have an entrepreneurial business woman that has truly defied skeptics.
Her latest business venture: DJ’ing. To showcase her DJ talents, her “Here I Am” Asia & Australia Tour 2014 brought her right to Perth.
I got lucky chance to meet Sasha in the VIP room. I’ve been familiar with her work since I was a late teen. She made time to say hello to those before she came onto stage. She’s a cool chick, really sweet and nice. I admire her ambition and congratulated her on finding success outside the industry whereas many others fall behind and drown in it.
So now to the review.
Despite her fame and successful past, only a handful of people turned out to Villa Nightclub in Perth to see former pornstar turned DJ Sasha Grey play her very first show in Perth. Villa did do a great job of marketing the event on social media, so I’m unsure why this was the case. I honestly thought it would be more packed.
The start of the night saw AKILLA spinning to a fairly empty dancefloor, with much of the audience staying on the outskirts and closer to the bar. It was a solid set but not even the bass-heavy remix of Beyonce’s Partition could get the audience starting on the dancefloor. More people arrived by the time Beecroft Sux took over, kicking things off with Snoop Dogg’s Sensual Seduction, but by the time he was halfway through his set, most people left the club or were smoking outside. It still looked pretty dead inside.
Before Sasha was due to play, Lukas Wimmler managed to get the dancefloor going and liven people up. His Bag Raiders’ Shooting Star has a nu-disco sound that enticed people onto the dancefloor and kept them there for the duration of his set.
Just after midnight, Sasha Grey started her set with tour mate Jessica Gonyea alongside her to make sure everything was working for her and set up properly. They started with Calvin Harris’ Summer and Mark Knight’s Your Love; getting a modest applause from the 50-60 people in the club. Her Tensake remix of Duke Dumont’s I Got U was doing OK, but Sasha wanted to see more enthusiasm, making her grab the microphone to say “Come on Perth, let’s see you guys dancing” in her adorable American drawl, of which only a few in the crowd responded eagerly, busting out dance moves.
Towards the end of her set, there were literally 5-10 people on the dancefloor. She finished up her set with Sander Van Doorn’s remix of Ghetto Superstar before leaving the stage quietly to a small cheer from the few left in Villa.
My friends and I felt a little bit embarrassed for Sasha Grey coming all the way out to Perth to such a lukewarm reception. But she took it like a champion, as of course, the show must go on.
I’m sure over time, once she builds momentum and proves her worth in the DJing/trance community, her next tour that brings her back to Perth will see a much bigger crowd turnout.
Overall, it was a fun night out with my friends. And I’m not going to lie, it was pretty cool meeting one of the most famous porn stars ever.
