A new and very tasty Ben and Jerrys icecream store has opened up at Hillarys Boat Harbour (North of Perth). I wasted no time in checking it out.
People of Perth’s northern suburbs rejoice – the popular Ben and Jerrys Icecream has arrived at Hillary’s Boat Harbour, opening their first scoop shop this year. I checked it out the other night with a girlfriend to get my ice-cream fix. Sure, you can get takeaway tubs of Ben and Jerry’s at a majority of most petrol stations and local supermarket stores in your pajama’s, but you can’t beat a day out on the water with mates, scenic views and ice-cream in hand. It’s all about the experience.
Ben and Jerry’s are known for their huge variety of unique flavour combinations. Starting from humble beginnings in America in 1978, childhood friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield completed a $5 ice cream making course before opening their first shop in a renovated Burlington petrol station in Vermont. As Ben has anosmia (the loss of sense of smell, either total or partial caused by a factor of reasons), he relied on ‘mouth feel’ for sensation. This led to the company’s trademark chunks being mixed in with their ice cream. What to follow would be one hell of an adventure for them both with the expenditure of their small business into a global phenomenon.
Flavours are created by what tastes great (but may look unusual). You’ll find funky, textured flavours with amusing name labels to match. They offer free sample tastes, so try out a few until you find your favourite. Long time popular favs include Chunky Monkey (banana with chocolate chunks and walnuts) and Phish food (chocolate icecream with marshmallow, caramel and chocolate fish).
I personally always go for something chocolatey. It’s delicious, but in small doses. It can get too ‘rich’ for some. A personal favourite of mine will always be the cookies and cream flavour, and the Ben and Jerry’s version doesn’t disappoint. Super fun chunky times!
They have a quaint little section to relax, although I’m not sure how often this will be used in summer when there is a stunning harbour just outside. They have a fridge full of tubs so you can even take your favourite flavour home.
Behold – our icecream selections! We each ordered 2 scoops in a tub and the photo doesn’t do them justice – they were BIG, and generous servings too. We found it hard to finish it all.
Location: Hillarys Boat Harbour, Sorrento Quay Boardwalk, Perth.
